BioWare and Mythic Merge, Mark Jacobs Leaves

Ea declared its intentions to merge its RPG divisions – most prominently including Mythic and BioWare – under a unmarried RPG/MMO banner helmed by BioWare founder Ray of light Muzyka. Longtime Mythic boss Mark Jacobs, but then, is leaving.

According to the post on the official Warhammer Online: Long time of Reckoning website, Jacobs – cave in and Chief operating officer of Mythic Entertainment – larboard the company yesterday, June 23rd. The other Mythic carbon monoxide gas-founder, Rob Denton, wish be stepping busy filling Jacobs' spot as big cheese.

Denton, though, will directly live reporting to BioWare cobalt-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka as part of Ea's newly RPG/MMO-focused megastudio comprehensive. The announcement only mentions Mythic and BioWare by name, though the particular verbiage refers to "a new group that includes both Fabulous and BioWare" (emphasis mine,) so one can assume that there will be other, little studios included in the merger arsenic well.

Boy, there's such you could possibly read into this. Did Jacobs leave of his own accord, operating theatre was this a "We'atomic number 75 not solely happy with you, please leave" move from an Ea unhappy with how WAR was faring? Sure, 300,000 subscribers isn't exactly kindling the world aflare, merely it's perfectly reasonable and sustainable from an MMOG these days.

Leastwise, merging a old MMOG developer with a familiar and respected RPG studio (currently development incomparable of the most highly-hoped-for MMOGs in modern retentiveness) is a pretty treble-profile move for EA. So, what do you whol think? Is this Ea boot things into high gear for a head-to-head face-off with Rash's World of Warcraft? Is this the death bell for the single-player RPG?

Feel free to freak and speculate wildly. I mean, that's half the diverting.

Update: Not much of an update here, to be honest – an Ea rep got back to us and pretty much habitual what we knew: "Mythic and BioWare are classified together into a new RPG/MMO studio mathematical group, led by Ray Muzyka, but will continue to operate as two teams. Nothing changes in the regular roles and responsibilities of the dev teams."
